I am proud to be able to show you my latest price piece of the squadron.
I recently obtained this original 18″ x 14″ oil painting on canvas. The painting is of a 218 Squadron Mk.II Wimpy W5457 HA-Z which FTR 18/19th August 1941, painted at RAF Marham. I initially had no idea of age or artist.
The frame was obviously not the original, so on careful removal I was delighted to find the signature of David-Thornton-Smith and the date June 1941. It appears that David was an official artist for the Air Ministry and the IWM currently have on show a few of his paintings. It is a fascinating painting, showing the unglamorous work of the Erks.
