Sergeant Howard Cornes

Twenty three year old Welshman Howard Cornes was the flight engineer aboard Short Stirling Mk.III BF519 HA-E which failed to return from a raid on Remscheid on July 30/31st 1943. His aircraft was attacked and shot down by Fw Tesuiden of E./NJG2 at 01.50hours crashing at Volkerak, Holland killing the entire crew. He is buried in the Bergen op Zoom War Cemetery. Of interest is the Observer brevet worn, when his position in the crew is recorded as flight engineer.
