This magnificent memorial honours the crew of “B” Flights, Squadron Leader Ashworth DFC and his two gunners, Sergeant William Whitehead (Front Gunner) and Sergeant William Watt (Rear Gunner) who were killed on Sunday 21st June 1942 while attacking Emden. The aircraft, Short Stirling Mk.I W7530 HA-Q was shot down at 02:00hrs by Lt Johannes Werth of 7./NJG2 crashing at Wognum, 5 km NNW of Hoorn, Holland.
